Through an extraordinary image of the wildlife in a few urban agglomerations, this film questions our supposed position above nature. In Artemis, the ‘animals as representatives of nature’ are given a voice in the first person singular; it is they who speak to us and give us a picture of their daily lives. We see European bison, deer, cormorants, foxes, herons and seagulls in their daily lives in one of the most densely populated areas in the world: the urban and suburban agglomeration of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The film’s ambivalent ending shows how quickly the odds could change — either way.
